SHORT SUMMARY
Set in the 1950’s, Marty Supreme is a film that follows Marty Mauser, a ping pong champion whos strugling to make ends meet in New York City. He craves glitz and glamor and would do anything to reach the heights he dreamed…. no matter who he hurt on the way.
REVIEW (spoilers!!!)
For this reveiw I asked Morton alumni Diana Santana for her input.
Santana was asked what she thought about the movie and what she would rate it out of 5, “When I first seen it in the movie theaters, lowkey,[I rated it] 4/5. I really liked it… But as time went on i really thought about it… I’m a give it a solid 3/5, mainly just because the character… I feel like if I seen it at home, it would’ve been a straight 3 [out of 5] right away… I would recommend it for sure, it was better than I thought”, Santana expressed.
I spoke with Santana before I watched the movie, and I didn’t know much about it beforehand, so I was intrigued by the movie’s plot. “… There were so many random scenes that you think this movie is really not about the sport, because even when the movie ended, when we stepped out into the theater, other people were saying ‘I thought this was a ping pong movie’… it wasn’t boring… There was a lot to it. My favorite part of the movie would be when Marty and Wally were like in this bowling area, and they had a ping pong table, and they pretended not to know each other and ended up scamming a whole bunch of people, getting a lot of money, seeing that was kinda fun,” Santana explained.
She listed so many postives so why did she lower her rating?
“Marty himself [was my least favorite character], Marty was lowkey like a bad guy, He was greedy, always putting himself first. He wasnt a bag guy the whole time. It’s just he wanted to succeed so badly at the sport that he became self-centered, and he didn’t care. For example, he got this girl pregnant and said that he would take care of them, but still mainly put his career first, until the end of the movie: that’s when he cared about the girl and the baby… Because at first, he kept lying about them, saying ‘oh, this is my cousin, this is my sister.’
But also, the girl was messed up because she faked being abused to be close to Marty. But this shows how much the girl had to put in just to be close to him, because she had to lie about stuff like that,” Santana shared.
CONTROVERSIES
Although Marty Supreme is a relatively recent release, it’s been in several critiques and controversies on social media. The main one being Timothée Chalamet receiving the Golden Globe Award instead of Michael B. Jordan. Surprisingly, the next big controversy is the soundtrack; many were not fond of the 80s-themed songs when the movie was based on the 50’s. And, while there was a more serious discussion over the Holocaust mentions in the film, many viewers thought that those scenes were distasteful.
I would rate Marty Supreme also a 3/5 Monchhichis. I think it was a fun watch, but not really my type of movie.
