Girls wrestling recap
The Girls wrestling 2024-2025 season was a success. Morton Berwyn-Cicero competed in various competitions. The girls kept their heads held up high and finished strong. The number of new female wrestlers that came out to the sport was amazing considering the growing sport. The team was invited and even competed in the IHSA Team State Tournament. Individually the girls wrestled over 15-45 matches. Morton has been a consistent contender in competitions and in the years that follow. The team hopes to continue having success moving forward.
Sophomore and first year wrestler Evelyn Delagado admits, “The first week was hard, I didn’t know anyone. When I wrestled a real match for the first time, I was disqualified for an illegal move called a full Nelson. I continued to learn from my mistakes with a team that is awesome.”
The Week of Oswego East:
Monday: Practice 4-6pm
Tuesday: Practice 2-5pm
Wednesday: Away at DGS, one dual v. Hinsdale South.
Thursday: Compete at Proviso East.
Friday Practice 4-6.
Saturday: Curie Condor Tournament
A solid week looks similar for the whole season. Girls and guys compete at least three times a week with duels, tris, quads, and tournaments. A combined girls and guys practice takes place every Monday, Tuesday, and Friday while Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays are likely match days, although it is regular to differ week to week.

Wrestling has a total of 14 weight class and one person per weight class known as a “starter,”
To be a starter you must challenge others for the starting spot. This means you must wrestle and beat everyone and anyone who wants to go for that weight class. During the season it is common to drop weight and move around. Starters can lose their spots by bad attendance, bad grades, and losing that week’s challenge match. It is important to know you can challenge for any weight class and every week.
Morton fell 9 points short of winning Regionals, falling behind Chicago Phoenix Military Academy. Still strong, 9 girls qualified for sectionals and from sectionals 3 made it out to state winning one match each.
Assistant coach, Cole Guerro adds, “We do not stop wrestling until the last girl is.”
As of March 1st, Morton proudly held 3, ranked wrestlers in the practice room this 2024-2025 seasons. The future looks bright for the relatively new girls wrestling program! If you are interested or have any questions regarding the 2025-2026 winter seasons don’t be afraid to reach out the head coach Fernando on teams or boys head coach, Hensley.
