Senior Day For Track & Field

Senior Day, most commonly known as senior night, is an event held in the High Schools or colleges to honor the senior athletes participating in team sports. It’s a special occasion where seniors are recognized for their dedication and contributions to the teams throughout their time in the program. Typically, there are ceremonies, speeches, and sometimes gifts or awards given to the seniors as a way to celebrate their achievements and to say goodbye as they move on from the team. On the girls’ track team this year, there were 16 seniors. However, how did the preparation process go and how long did it take for this special morning?

Setting up a senior night event can vary depending on the school or organization hosting the event. Planning can take a few weeks to a month to properly organize and execute a memorable senior day celebration. Daniel Bulster, current head coach for Girls’ Cross Country and Track and Special Education teacher at Morton East talks about how this big event was executed and how long did the process go on for. “It takes a month or so to organize this event,” Bulster said. The process of planning the event came with the responsibilities of getting flowers, and shirts and having the underclassmen create posters for the seniors, all done by the time of the event which was March 9.  This event takes so much time and effort from the coaches that it could be stressful, but have you stopped and thought, how are the athletes feeling coming closer and closer to this big day?

Senior Camila Salcedo, Class of 2024, has expressed how exciting this event can be not only for her but towards some of the other senior girls. Salcedo has been on the track team for the past three years, “I’m pretty excited for senior day, it’s so weird that the day I’ve been waiting for the past three years is finally almost here.”  The seniors enjoyed this moment and also recognized what school they would be attending, what they may be studying, and what their favorite memory from the season was. Some seniors will continue their track and field participation in college and Camila Salcedo is one of them. Salcedo has committed to Dominican University and will be running Cross Country and Track & Field. So as the day came to a close for the team, some seniors also concluded their track and field experience.
