Being on the girls’ tennis team isn’t just about hitting balls or winning matches. It takes a lot of time and effort. Senior Jimena Rivera said people don’t really see that. “Even though the season seems short, we have at least two games every week, sometimes even on Saturdays,” she said. “It’s challenging coming home late, eating, showering, and then doing homework, but it’s possible if you put in the effort.”
This season has been full of highs, lows, and new experiences. “Although the season is about to end, it’s been really good,” Rivera said. “We’ve had a lot of accomplishments and improvements from everyone. It’s been fun getting closer with teammates and seeing everyone challenge themselves.”
Team captain Junior Megan Murga shared that being a leader can be rewarding, but also challenging. “One of the hardest parts about being captain is getting people to respect you as someone who’s just trying to give advice,” she said. “I’m not trying to tell people what to do, I’m just trying to give them the advice I wish I had when I started. We were all beginners once, and I’m still learning too.”
One of Murga’s favorite memories this season was the team’s bus rides. “On away games, we always pick a song to play when we get to the school,” she said. “Everyone sings, and we always end up singing to Bruno Mars or Bad Bunny. I love the vibes—it’s amazing.”
The team also takes pride in representing their school with sportsmanship and kindness. “Most schools would say we’re a nice school to play,” Rivera said. “At the end of the day, we’re just girls who happen to love tennis.”
As for next season, Murga hopes to see the team grow even more. “I hope next year we have more players, and I think the beginners from this year are already improving a lot,” she said.
Both players agreed that more student support would mean a great deal. “Even simple things like following the team’s Instagram or liking our posts help,” Rivera said. Murga added, “It would be really appreciated if people showed up to our games. We post all the game info, but our student section is always pretty empty.”
For these girls, tennis isn’t just a sport. It’s teamwork, effort, and a space where they’ve built friendships that make every long practice and late night worth it.
