Get to know the Girls Tennis Team!

Three West players – Gaby, Haley, Ixchel – tell their tennis stories.

As the tennis season comes to a finish with sectionals on October 17th, coference play has just passed on the 11th of October. This is the perfect moment for The Sterling to capture the players’ passionate feelings, not only as these final games pass, but also as these are some of the players’ last moments in high school tennis.

Gabriela Leyva

Senior varsity doubles player and spring season badminton player Gabriela Leyva reflected on her time with the team:

Q: Would you play tennis in college or professionally?

A: “… if I could get there, I would, but most likely not”

Q: What’s your favorite tennis memory?

A: “Probably when I was starting out first last year… I really did enjoy it, it was really fun… and probably singing on our last day, it was really cute.”

Q: Is there anything you would like to add?

A: “… Join a sport…joining a sport is a really good thing to do, it keeps you involved and it’s really fun.”

Senior Haley Wyant has played tennis for two years; she now plays two doubles for the varsity teams. She’s also on track to be #1 on the badminton team at Morton West. As her Tennis season draws to an end, she shared some of her thoughts.

Q: Why did you join the tennis team?

A: “I started just because I thought it would be fun.”

Q: What are you best at in tennis?

A: “.. I’m best at doubles, playing front, not back, and it’s easier.”

Q: What’s your experience with the team?

A: “Playing tennis is very fun, very competitive, and I enjoy playing it with my teammates and friends… I’m very excited to be going to sectionals, and having been playing on the team for so long, it was a really good experience: it was just enjoyable.”

Junior player Ixchel Ordonez, who’s been on the team for three years and plays 4th doubles, expressed her enthusiasm towards tennis.

Q: What made you start playing tennis?

A: “I started because my mom would take me when I was, like, really little to the playground.”

Q: How do u feel about playing tennis?

A: “I think it’s really fun…even though you’re like individually playing it’s really a team sport as well, because you get to know other people, you get to know your team better, and I just like the experience of getting to know other people.”

Q: Would you like to add anything else?

A: “Overall, tennis is a really good sport; it’s really enjoyable. I think everyone should definitely join it at some point. If not, just go watch a game, but it’s a sport that really helps you get to know people.”
