A break is a great thing… unless it’s happening to an Easter egg.
On the Friday before break, the SAALT club here at Morton West held a spring lock-in which an Easter egg hunt theme. Since Easter egg hunt was the theme, there were eggs hidden all around the different places where the event was held. Whether tucked near the sand pits in the field house or stashed behind mats in the main gym, the mysterious locations of the eggs yielded fun… and surprises.
The eggs contained candy and different rewards like credit to the bookstore, different dress-downs, and one golden egg that had the reward of a 55 inch tv. Which one lucky person was able to win and enjoy. The Lucky Winner was Maximus Rodriguez!
The lock-in is just like a big sleepover at the school with different activities, like the pool, movies, and even a video game room. Attendees were also able to play volleyball, basketball, and even football in the open space. The students who went were provided with pizza and snacks for the night. The lock-in is an awesome thing to experience at least once if you can get the chance to. The one activity that gets a lot of people excited is the pool. The pool was open from 12 to 2 am for attendees to jump in for a dip. In the pool, students played volleyball and basketball and jumped off of the diving board. Everyone was safe because some of our own school’s trained student lifeguards were on duty and overseeing the festivities.
The Sterling talked to the president of SAALT club, Melissa Furbeck, about her thoughts of the event and how did turned out at the end of it all.
Q: Do you think the Easter egg hunt was a great idea to have during the lock-in?
M: I think the addition of the eg hunt factor was a good idea for the event and I think we should do more things like that. Even if it is not for a lock-in, it could be for a normal during the school day thing as well.
Q: Can we see any new activities coming to the next lock-in?
M: I think the club is planning on adding new things to the lock-in next year, we are going to talk about it in our next meeting.
Q: Can people see more from the club this year?
M: We are planning to try to do one more fundraiser before this school year is over.
The sterling was also able to speak to one of the sponsors of the SAALT club who helps led the Lock in, Ms. James.
Q: What were the final results from the Lock-In?
J: The Lock-In was a success! We had a strong turnout with students 155 students actively participating in all the planned activities. From games, team-building stations, and food to the late-night egg hunt, students stayed engaged and positive throughout the night. One of the highlights was the golden egg winner, who went home with a 32” smart TV, which created a lot of excitement and motivation. Overall, the event strengthened student connections and promoted a fun, safe environment after school hours.
Q: Would you do this theme again?
J: Absolutely. The theme was a hit—students loved the energy, creativity, and surprises tied to the egg hunt and late-night challenges. It gave them something unique to look forward to, and many expressed they’d love to see it return next year. It was fun, interactive, and different from other school events.
Q: Are there new things you want to add for the next lock-in?
J: Yes! Based on feedback and observations, I’d love to add more structured breakout activities or mini competitions with small prizes to keep the energy flowing throughout the night. I’d also consider bringing in a performer earlier in the evening to kick things off. Another idea is to create a quiet/wind-down zone with relaxing activities for students who need a break from the noise and action. The goal is always to improve and tailor it more toward student needs and interests!
I think the lock-in was a good event that happened for this 24-25 school year.
