As the sun begins to rise higher in the sky, signaling the arrival of spring, excitement fills the air for the Morton girls’ soccer team as they kick off their new season. With the sound of cleats hitting the turf and the chatter of teammates warming up, the atmosphere is electric. This year, the team is not just looking to compete: they aim to bond, grow together, and dominate the field and their opponents.
The start of season has been filled with rigorous training sessions, where players have worked on their techniques, improved their fitness levels, and built a strong sense of sisterhood between each other. When asked, what do you think will be the biggest challenges for the team this season, and how do you plan to overcome them?
Number 3 on team Mayrin Sanchez stated “I feel like our biggest challenge is understanding how we all play as a team, we lost some great d2 players last year and we have to continue having the team up regardless if they aren’t with us anymore we need to have our heads high, and to beat our biggest rival team of the year will also be a great challenge but all we need is to focus and communicate and I’m sure we’ll make it far into the season.” Although some great Morton players graduated last season this year’s girls are still more motivated then ever and looking to get far this season.
Nowhere has that been more evident than the start of this season. Despite a 4-3 opening loss to De La Salle, the girls have stormed to a record of 7-1, outscoring opponents 33-5 and sealing their last three victories with shutouts against Aurora East, Riverside-Brookfield, and Willowbrook (as of April 10).
This team is focused on their goals. They aim to build on their previous season’s experiences, learn from their mistakes, and celebrate their victories, big and small. The bond formed during practices and team-building activities will be crucial as they face challenges on the field. With determination and a shared passion for the game, the girls’ soccer team is ready to make this season unforgettable, not just in terms of wins and losses, but in the memories they create together.
