This year concluded the beginning of a new IHSA sport for the Mustangs of Morton: This very first OFFICIAL season for our girls flag football team, our ladies have been working very strong this season, leading themselves an even record of 7 wins-7 losses before heading up to their regionals game against Michele Clark on October 10th .
Leading up to their regionals game, first-year player, Senior Jeanette Aldana, expressed how she was in fact afraid going up against Michele Clark as ” we had a team full of good athletes, but we just couldn’t figure out how to work together, one as a team.”
However, Aldana continues that as her season went on, ”being able to practice against each other unified us on the field, and flag football really made us come together as a team to conclude and take home our win.”
Junior Brianely Sanchez, expresses similar experiences with Aldana as ” this being the first IHSA season for us was a big step especially after concluding our win, all our hard work led us up to this success, and going into this game, all I can say is it felt amazing! I came with the people I enjoy being around as well as enjoy doing the same things with.”
Shortly after our girls took home their regionals win, Morton 201 recognized their win at the varsity boys breast cancer pink out football game on October 11th at the West stadium. Over the next few days, the team prepared themselves for their sectionals playoffs coming up.
Unfortunately, the girls flag football team concluded in the season ending after they sadly took the loss at home against Lane Tech on October 16th. Although this shattered the hearts for all of the players, the ladies were able to recognize their hard work from this entire season and this game.
Sanchez explained: “We all put [in] our all during that game even when we had HUGE obstacles including hail and rain, though I felt I underperformed because of this, we didn’t stop when our hands and legs were going numb.”
Aldana also expressed her feelings after the game, how she was ”crying on the bus ride home, I cant believe it was over just like that. I was heartbroken but I’m very grateful and happy with my girls and our season. I know this is only going to be helpful for my rugby season.” Aldana explained.
