History can be about anything, not just war and presidents. This week 40 years ago a lot was happening at Morton West.
The year was 1984 and it was their homecoming week for the Falcons. Yes, for the Falcons not the Mustangs: this was the the last year before Morton West and East combined as one school for sports. The Falcons football team was taking on the Hornets of Hinsdale South. Senior quarterback Joe Maietta was prepping for his final homecoming game.
Another major event was going on, not at Morton but in the area of Chicago and NFL fans all over. Walter Payton broke Jim Brown’s career rushing yards record against the New Orleans Saints on October 7. Payton would finish his career in 1987 with 16,726 rushing yards.
The presidential race was going on it was Ronald Reagan vs Walter Mondale. Reagan was in the lead of all the polls as the voters went into vote. Some of the public viewed Reagan as a bad choice for president because of reasons dealing with public services. But, Reagan kept the lead the whole time the race was going. He ended up becoming the 40th president of the United States.
