“Where are you planning on going to college?”
A question that you have probably been asked many times before by teachers, family, friends or even asked yourself. Deciding on where you want to go whether it is community college or university can be a lot. The Sterling wants to help guide you, to find the right place for you.
To start, what should you major in? There are over 1,800 majors according to MyMajors.com, that cover all kinds of subjects. From Greek to turfgrass science (Maintaining grass species) there is a major for everyone. You can take career quizzes, but I have found that they tend to not help much. Naviance is the tool I used to find what to major in, so I believe it is extremely useful. It lets look at lots of different careers linked to majors and letting you see an overview of the career. Do not worry about what makes the most money or how the niche the major is. You should really just find what interests you most and pursue it.
If you are struggling to figure out what you want to pursue and still want to go to college no problem community colleges are a great place to look. A community college are many times open admission and affordable making them easily accessible. Here you can get your associates degree and finish your general education requirements. You generally spend two years at a community college. Which is useful since if decide to go to a university afterward by saving money on taking the same classes or even to get into some careers. You can even go to a university as undecided to as high as a bachelor’s degree and choose when you are ready.
But what if you already have your major in mind?
Then for you the most important thing to look for is what schools have your major and if so, which have good programs for it. Niche.com is a useful tool when searching for university that are the best rated for a particular major. It can be very helpful when trying to select a group of universities to apply to.
When choosing universities, you should never underestimate yourself. If you want to shoot high and apply for an IV league school that supports your major go ahead! If you want to apply for a school out of the country, no problem there! In the event it does not work out no worries. There are so many other universities to choose from.
As my last piece of advice, which I feel is most important when looking for any school community college or university you should find a place where you feel comfortable. It should be an environment where you can focus on learning and feel welcome. Along with being an environment that will not hinder you. If you are easily distracted by events like parties and social gatherings, then schools that are known as “party schools” should probably be avoided for your educational benefit. There are so many schools out there that fits communities of all kinds of people. So, never get discouraged if you are struggling. Always remember there is a school for everyone even you.
