This pasted weekend September 29,2024 Berwyn hosted their Annual Hispanic Heritage Parade. With National Heritage Month beginning September 15 and ending October 15 honoring the cultures and contributions of Hispanics and Latino Americans. I would like to recognize the Spanish Honor Society also known SHH. One of the many Morton West clubs participated in the parade. SHH enjoyed being apart of the parade. While walking around they noticed everyone outside their houses smiling, cheering, waving their own country flags. SHH was able to brighten up their community faces by simply going up tp adults and children handing them candy, making everyone feel included and being proud of their culture. SHH President Kevin Moreno who has been apart of SHH 4 years explains “Its a society were Morton West Students who have excelled in their Spanish classes take interest in their culture or another culture to learn more about what SHH has to offer”. Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica works on giving back to the community and focuses on the Spanish language and Hispanic/culture.

Juan Hernandez one of SHH newest sponsor also new to Morton West is a TA for ELA classes for freshman he states ” I believe SHH should be more well know because it gives the ability for many students that might feel a disconnection with their culture, they would have a place to fit in because not everyone who relates themselves to Hispanic believe they are because their is a language barre. Being apart of this society they can feel inclusive, it gives them the ability to feel more connected to their roots”. SHH offers a place to be apart of a Familia they work together to help within their school and community. Going to food pantries, hosting events like Diá De Los Muertos, Women Empowerment event, Paleta Social and much more! With completing 30 hours of community services and 6 events they need to attend each year.
David Gomez Vice President of SHH explains why it is important to celebrate this month ” it’s important to be InTouch with your roots not all of the SHH students are Hispanic but it gives them knowledge to know about peoples Hispanic roots to connect with your people” As generations grow we have to carry on our culture so it won’t die out. With that said SHH will have Mariachi Serinas performing the 9th of October in the morning to continue celebrating!
