“Senior year is one of your easiest years because you’ll basically be done with school your just waiting to graduate.”
That’s what most seniors at Morton west high school in Berwyn, Illinois heard from their peers and counselors for the past 3 years, but is that what’s really accurate?
Sure, some may believe senior year is already a breeze and you really just have to push yourself until you make it to walking across that stage. However, what about for student athletes or those involved in clubs? The first semester of your senior year is expected to be filled with college hassles. Setting up your common app, filing for financial aid, deciding your major, the list goes on. It’s important for senior athletes and club participants who prioritize going to college to also account for the steps that will lead them to their future.
Cross country and track athlete of 4 years, Victoria Lopez, touches on the fact that her sports have already taken a toll on the start of her college search.
“I feel like I’ve had less time to dedicate toward researching more about colleges and specific programs as well as factors like scholarships and loans that are gonna play into choosing a college,” Lopez said.
She added that her sport has taken significant time away from her college research and finding the best school for her as well as “choosing what I want to do in college because I know I want to run in college, and it’s making me push myself more in school and my sport so I can go to a college helpful to making me grow in both.” Lopez reveals.
Varsity basketball player, Julissa Hernandez expresses similar issues to Lopez when it comes to her sport being involved with her college search.
“Though I have only been playing basketball since sophomore year, it is a passion I know I want to pursue in college which puts a toll on my search since I wanna be able to find a school that’s good for me and my sport as well as my as academics,” she noted.
Senior athletes who consider playing a sport in college need to be quick in action when looking into their college search, as it can get more difficult and time-consuming with their sport involved.
