Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and the football season, all of Morton West came together for a pep assembly which included performances from the band, the folkloric dance team, the dance team, and the cheer team. Many students were able to participate in different games – including tug-of-war, sack races, and spoon balancing – that were part of the festivities.
Taking center stage, however, was the tug-of-war, which pitted grade classes against each other and even teachers against students. The Sterling interviewed Mark Dante Albano, one of the students who competed for the Morton West seniors in the tug-of-war against the sophomores.
Q: How did it feel to win against the sophomores?
M:Well it was a challenge. If I’m being honest I was a bit scared, but I knew that [with] the team’s cooperation, we will be able to persevere and we did win overall.
Q: With the weather being very hot and sunny. Did it affect your performance?
M: The warm temperature did distract me. But we are able to push through it overall.
Q: We saw you do a dance of a celebration at the end of the game, were you that excited?
M: Yeah. Fun fact about that dance, I have been doing that since middle and training that dance since 6th or 7th grade. And since then I have mastered that dance.
Mark and all the different students go head to head makes all the assemblies more interesting and fun.
Mr. Rush was able to interview student Abdul Rizwan and his teammate, Benny Kearns, after they did the tug-of-war with the Juniors.
Q: How does it feel to beat the freshmen out there?
B: It was light work, all technique not that much skills.
A: I slipped like 5 times while being out there. It’s because I was in my crocs.
Q: If we do this again, would you defend your title?
A: Hell yeah!
Who knows if the juniors will actually be able to come back and win again? It may take another all-school assembly to find out.
