In an emotional farewell, Morton senior football players took the field for the last time as a Mustang on Friday against Hinsdale South.
For many players on the team, the moment was bittersweet. Even though the season didn’t go as intended, it still was a season to remember for these seniors.
Most, if not all seniors, have played football for all four years, dreading the end of high school football. To most players, football was more than just a sport. It was about the brotherhood and experiences that were created by one another.
“Besides players just being my teammates, they were like my brothers. I would go to battle for them” says Daniel Torres, starting Safety.
Torres, a captain and leader on Varsity, has always been for his team. It was always about the bigger picture for Torres, from dominating on Morton’s Freshmen A team, to moving up to Varsity his Sophomore year.
Unbreakable bonds were made trusting one another to give everything they had for each other. For some players, if not most, this was their last season putting the pads on for good.
“It kind of feels like I’m missing a piece of myself. Especially because it’s my last season and I might not play in college. On top of that, it didn’t go as planned and there’s no next season to work towards” says Makhari Germany, the starting Corner.
Germany, a captain on Varsity, devoted all his time to the sport, and being a great leader for the team. From helping teammates with rides, to helping them at practice perfect their craft.
This was his final season to look forward to, as he does not have the opportunity to continue playing after high school.
For others, this is just the beginning with college football ahead of them.
“I’m sad that high school football is over, however, at the same time, I know I’m going to play at the college level, so I’m happy and ready for the future” says starting Defensive End, Tyler Nichols.
Nichols, another captain, has accomplished many achievements at Morton. From playing Varsity all four years of high school. His junior year getting All-Conference Defensive End, leading the Morton Defense with the most tackles. He wasn’t done there, he also received the Defensive Player of the Year in the West Suburban Silver Conference.
Nichols, and others are ready for new begins with their college careers beginning next season.
